Retinoblastoma

Symptoms: When light falls on the pupil, it appears white and may be permanently dilated (mydriasis). In many cases it is accompanied by strabismus (a squint), and less often by pain in the eye.

In the early stages, if the tumor has not spread beyond the eye, it is treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and laser photocoagulation. At an advanced stage, removal of the eye will most likely be necessary. In mild cases, or in those treated early, vision often remains reduced and conventional glasses may not be enough. The answer to that is specialized low vision glasses combined with training, so that the affected eye can contribute to binocular vision.
